It is not at all difficult to fool people. The US invaded Iraq on
completely false premises. Colin Powell convinced the UN that Hussein had
terrifying weapons of mass destruction, when every credible expert and
scientist said this was nonsense.

This is, if anything, the foundation of modern capitalism. Far more money
is spent on lying to people (advertising, PR), than on actual innovation or
invention.
