The intent is to keep the computer up over short interruptions and then 
cause a graceful shutdown before the battery dies on longer breaks.  UPS 
systems that keep everything running through extended power failures are 
expensive.  When I was at Unitel, we had a battery plant that could keep 
things going for about 3 days and that was backed up by diesel & turbine 
generators.
