Certainly true.  The OpenRD has eSATA, but is otherwise similar in power
consumption to the sheevaplug (being the same CPU and ram and such).
I think it has room for a laptop SATA driver internally too.

Is the eeebox too expensive to be a viable option?

Of course there is the Asus TS server
