Hi Jing,
Thanks for your interest in my problem.

You were *right,* I was not running aticonfig under super user. There was no
indication that I had to do it this way.
Anyway, I can confirm that the backup was indeed sucesssful.  So, that path
to /etc/X11/ is definitely not the problem.

I have just re-executed aticonfig as super user with the following poor
result ending in an abort...
