On Ubuntu, if your card is supported by the drivers in the
repositories, all you need to do is this...
$ sudo resticted-manager
...now check the box for your video card, modprobe, and restart Xorg
(or just reboot)
System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects
