That's the key right there.  Openness actually has a tendency to open new 
markets (imagine :)  So after being dragged kicking and screaming in to a 
new century certain powerful groups then realise they can make a buck off 
the new market.  It happens time and time again and they still don't get 
it.  Me cynical, of course not ;)
