Did you mean ssh -X? I have never used -Y, although it appears similar.
I believe it requires that 'xauth' be available in the path on the
remote system or it won't setup any of the X stuff.
For example on debian you need xbase-clients installed to have
/usr/bin/xauth, which ssh requires to setup X forwarding on the remote
end.
