Xauthority files on Redhat AS

I have several Redhat AS3 servers.  When I log in via ssh -Y, some
systems create a .Xauthorty file while other don't.  All systems have
the XFree86-xauth rpm installed.  What triggers the creation of the
.Xauthority file?
