There was a guy working on alternative init systems for Debian a while back.
He gave an interesting presentation at Debconf2 (held at York). No idea if
he's progressed since then but you can read his paper at
http://people.debian.org/~hmh/debconf2/debconf2-initscripts-bkg.pdf ...
perhaps you can help him out ;-)
