Have you tried rebooting the computer? I know that sounds like a silly
suggestion, but....

1. turn on your printer/plug it into your computer/etc
2. make sure CUPS is as close to being right as you can figure out
3. reboot your computer
4. try printing a test page

When I was first trying to get CUPS to work I had to reboot my computer
with the printer ALREADY ON! (this part is very critical) for the computer
to understand that the printer was there. My printer is now on all of the
time so that I don't have to reboot whenever I feel like printing.

It may not work for everyone, but it worked for me.

PS I don't really care why it works this way, my computer and I have come
to an understanding that this is The Way It Works. :)
