Which sound driver are you using?  emu10k1 (OSS Lite) or snd-emu10k1
(ALSA)?

ALSA is highly recomended over OSS lite.

If you are using alsa, make sure the oss emulation is enabled too, or oss
applications can't access sound, even though alsa aware applications can.

Try alsamixer or alsamixergui if you are using the alsa driver.
