Instant messaging --> now what?

I think this is a legal issue of protecting privacy as the companies
themselves would be liable for personal information that someone using these
tools could pass on or post about someone else without having their written
consent. It has to do with new privacy legislation such as the Canadian
PIPEDA laws. It isn't about charging for the use of the products this time!

Subject: [TLUG]: Instant messaging --> now what?

Hi

Yahoo has tried to block third party software from
connecting to his network (although Gaim seems to have
success connecting with the new protocol in the last
version).
M$N is going to close third party software too on
October 15th.
The question is: what shall we use for IM? ICQ is an
option, LICQ is pretty nice... Jabber? People is used
to use smilies, Jabber has them?

I think this sort of policies that are having IM
giants are very bad for everyone... And that4s why I
think that something Free has to arise to fill the
holes they are going to leave...

I would like to say to a window$ user 'if you want to
use a free IM you can use %' but % is unknown for me
now.

What do you think about it?
