Screen repair is quite different from what you're describing.  I have 
replaced a battery (on an LG manufactured phone coincidentally).  That 
sort of thing can be replaced if you can find a replacement.  There are 
some people who offer unlocking service though.  Do you know what 
carrier the phone was with originally?
