resizing a ext3 partition

By "the end", you mean "the beginning", no?  fdisk starts from 2048
(1M/512k) from the beginning, and it won't accept less than that.  Try
another program (ie. sfdisk, cfdisk).  Maybe it accepts 1 as the
beginning.
