I like the rolling update idea myself, which is probably why I tend to
run Debian unstable on my desktop machines.

I don't want to have to get 3rd party software just to get the UI working.
Microsoft has to admit they fucked up and fix it.

And the magic corners is a change to the desktop.

On some machines I have purged pulseaudio from existence.

Now if you see stuff in the pulse audio volume thing, then that's a start
I guess.  Have you checked that the volume isn't muted in alsamixer?
Often alsa defaults to mute master.

You did plug in and power on the speakers right?  And they are connected
to the right jack.  I guess if they work with ubuntu then probably yes.
