If you only need to do mail, IMAP is great.

The hard part is if you need to do mobile calendaring and syncing of
corporate contact lists etc.  IMAP won't help you.

If you *need* to do ActiveSync(tm), Z-push seems to be the only FOSS
option, it integrates with Zarafa, but I've not personally tried it
and would like to hear other people's experiences.

They have a virtual appliance to download-and-test the core product.



If you don't need ActiveSync, but you do need calendars and other
stuff, the "see also" section of the Zarafa Wikipedia entry has a list
of projects to check out too:

A standards based approach would be to support IMAP, CalDav and CardDav.

Note that Android doesn't support any of these natively and I haven't
yet found a good set of apps to do the protocols.

But Android does do ActiveSync(tm) :-(
