Not really. The power cost alone of running a laptop/small PC 24/7 would
equal the hardware cost of a Raspberry Pi. If a Raspberry Pi can
handle the media formats you need, why not?

I don't really find the ARM-specific stuff a problem; GPIO is a bonus,
for when I need it. I do have a similar experience to you with the
BeagleBone Black, though. Mine is currently sitting unpowered and
unloved after a very frustrating initial experience.
