I didn't love SLS or slackware. Lots was not good. But they were there
and certainly better than DOS. Redhat was a big improvement, but not
until Debian could I say I found something really to love.
I certainly did not love twm, but well it got the job done at the time.
mwm sure wasn't great either. xfce is quite nice and doesn't get in
the way or do anything stupid. Not very pretty by default, but then
again looks don't really matter to functionality.
