2.4Ghz vs. 5GHz antenna

I'm sort of limited to what I can buy.  The new dual-band adapter came
with antennas that looked exactly like the antenna on my old Wireless-G
adapter.  That's why I thought I could use 2.4GHz external antenna.

Moving my tower into open space and pointing its back towards the router
(D-Link DIR-655, which is B/G/N300 router), I get the same problem
regardless of antennas.
