Kinda interesting stuff.
They are much like serial consoles - you still use them a lot in the datacenter world.
You know, I've often wondered whether amodem could be used to connect to a serial port.

People still use modems ... for sending/receiving faxes. Also, modems
are still used in some specialized roles, like point of sale
terminals. The modems I am offering could do fine in these roles. But
rack mount modems were / are specialized bits of hardware that have
always had a limited audience...
