Yep.  Several years ago, I planned the installation of several bays of 
AT&T Paradyne modem shelves.  IIRC, there were 8 shelves (16 modems 
each) per bay, along with a controller shelf.  They had a common 
supervisory/admin bus that daisy chained between shelves.
