Dialup optimization?

  What parameters besides MTU = 576 do you suggest for dialup?  And
also, how can they be implemented by echoing to various files in the
/proc/sys/net directory?  Some years ago, this was an easy Google
search.  Now the search results are polluted by a gazillion pieces of
"free download" or "shareware" Windows registry tweakers.
