GMail to Mobile won't work

To what an extend this is reliable? Did anything change?

When I worked about 2 years ago as a software developer (a sort of 
commercial web site - service, for the use of a broad community) we 
wanted to use SMS notifications. But that worked horribly. The web site 
was planned to be used by US and Canadians. So many internet providers. 
Some SMS addresses change without notice. Some do not work at all as 
advertised. We had also a big problem with Rogers as well.
