Finding this very useful. It is similar to Alt-F2, in that you can
type the first few letters of an application name and it will find
similar. You can also browse your filesystem, though, and there are
plugins for other functions, like one of my favourites which lets you
paste in a long URL for shortening with TinyURL.

Available in Debian repos, works with Gnome 3, I almost never use the
Activities overlay anymore.
