CyangenMod or Android Market for tethering?

I'm running Android 2.1 on an Rogers HTC Magic I just got from a
friend.  I've got the 6GB data plan from Rogers.  I want to tether to
my Debian Squeeze laptop and also to my Nokia N800.

I know I can get native tethering my installing the latestest
CyangenMod (based on Android 2.2 which includes it) if this is not
risky or I'd get an app from the Marketplace if someone here can
suggest one.   I'm new to Android and don't want to get into a major
project if I can help it.
