OT: Telus "3G" network?

I notice that Telus is currently advertising that they have "Canada's
largest 3G+ network".

It then goes on to talk about their HSPA+ network and "3GPP" SIM cards.

I had thought that 3G was tied to GSM networks (telus being CDMA or
AFAIK moving towards upgrades through WCDMA). Can somebody relieve me
of confusion on this? How do 3G, GDM, (w)CDMA, and SIM cards etc all
relate to each other?
