wifi 450-500 feet, almost line of sight, anyone done this?

Well, people have successfully done unamplified 802.11b WiFi over a
distance of 125 miles:

Okay, so this involved a barren area of the Nevada desert, a 12 foot
and a 10 foot antenna... So, 600 feet can clearly be done, but...

So, bottom line, if you pay attention to antennas you can get 600'
easy, but you will need directional antennas properly pointed...
