This month's NewTLUG meeting will be held
Tues May 27,
at the IBM offices 3600 Steeles Ave E.
**Important**
This meeting is free and all are welcome, however, all attendees will be
required to have a security badge. Badges should be prepared in advance.
If you plan to attend, please send your name to Paul (off-list at
<pmora-G1DYhSM1WHTQT0dZR+AlfA at public.gmane.org>), preferably by the Monday before the meeting.
...and please be sure to return badges to the front reception at the end
of the session.
Thanks: to Paul for helping NewTLUG not only by arranging for a room and
hosting
our meetings at IBM but also with looking after the badges.
Badges: please email Paul Mora <pmora-G1DYhSM1WHTQT0dZR+AlfA at public.gmane.org> to pre-register
Date and Time: Tues May 27, 7-10pm
Topics:
1) Evan Leibovitch <evan-ieNeDk6JonTYtjvyW6yDsg at public.gmane.org> will show how he dealt with a cast-off
system that a relative gave him that had Win98, Celeron, etc. Xubuntu
refused to install. He ended up evaluating DSL (Damm Small Linux) and
eventually settled on Puppy Linux.
Evan plans to bring in that system (a minitower) to wipe clean and
demonstrate a live Puppy or DSL install.
2) Ken Brown <kaelbee-PeCUgM4zDv73fQ9qLvQP4Q at public.gmane.org> will speak and demonstrate the use of
Konqueror to rip and encode CD's in one step. Konqueror can encode Ogg,
Mp3, Wav, and Flac all in one pass.
Ken will also talk about cdparanoia. It has an excellent error correcting
function. He will bring a badly scratched disc and have it play perfectly.
For people using Gnome-based distro's, like Ubuntu, Fedora, etc, Grip and
Lame will be discussed.
Ripping DVDs with Vobcopy ( command line) and Thoggen (GTK) will be
demonstrated.
Q&A:
There should be time for questions and answers, likely in the
recent UU style format, hosted by Colin McGregor <colinmc151-bJEeYj9oJeDQT0dZR+AlfA at public.gmane.org>
Après-meet:
After the meeting some will adjourn to a local coffee shop for continued
discussion and general world problem solving.
Location:
IBM offices 3600 Steeles Ave East, north side of Steeles at Pharmacy/Esna
Park (between Victoria Park and Warden)
