I have all the necessary hardware and software for them to learn on. 
The reality is that some of them have a very poor education.  They don't 
have the resourcefulness to even use google let alone understand the 
material they find.  They need a significant amount of hand holding, at 
least to get started.  As such books are useful to give them a resource 
they can read on their own with minimal frustration.

Thanks for your offer of the Linux books but I think they won't be able 
to benefit from them.  Thanks to everyone else who provided resources 
and suggestions.
