From what I've seen on the official IRC support channel, #linode on
irc.freenode.net, the entire staff (and a bunch of happy customers)
offer some impressive handholding. I can only imagine the same holds
true for actual support tickets.

I won't *guarantee* they'll help you, and you do need to be able to get
around with root on a Linux box, but I would say that they encourage you
to learn system administration while you get your Linode going.

Basically, it's a tiny company where all the staff, including the owner,
are ridiculously accessible, and they want you to be able to do the
things you need to do on your server. But you still start out with a
brand-new install of your distribution of choice.

You're right about spam, but there's no restriction on the type of
content you serve. If you want to put a (legal) porn site on a Linode,
that's fine. The full terms of service are available here:

   http://www.linode.com/tos.cfm

(Not that this matters directly in this case, but I wouldn't want people
to think that Linode has some sort of speech restrictions outside of
illegal or network-abusive behavior, because they don't have those
restrictions.)

<dagbrown> I know a guy who wrote a binary search library for a course
entirely in pure sh. They said "you can use any language you
want!" The next assignment was "except sh and perl." The one
after that was "you will do this in C."
