And now I don't have the privilege of Shut Down as regular user - the 
Shut Down feature (icon) is missing from the System>Quit menu. this is 
the problem I had last time I was trying to get the latest alsa to work 
with the emu1212m. That ended in a re-install of the OS.

Well, nobody's online so I might as well reboot (if I can).
