Hi Randy,
I use Compaq Presario V3000 and seems like we have an identical sound device:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)
I use Opensuse10.2 and sound works nice.
To test sound you can try playing a music CD. I believe ubuntu will start
appropriate program automatically when you insert the CD.
