An alternative that's definitely worth a shot is Tovid. It's mainly a command
line tool, though it does have a very simple and easy to use GUI (which has
never crashed on me...). Converting almost any format to ntsc mpeg format is
dead easy, as is creating a menu for the dvd . The menus can go from simple to
over-the-top eye-candy.
Tovid packages are available for Debian, Ubuntu and Mandriva that I'm sure of,
but building even the SVN version is not exactly rocket science.
