No matter how you get your internet connection, at some point it's 
shared.  While with ADSL, you have a dedicated path to the CO, the line 
into the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Module) shelf is shared.  
For example, a couple of years ago, I was working on some DSLAMS for 
Sprint, located in the Bell CO's.  They had one 45 Mb/s DS3 shared among 
(IIRC) 192 ADSL lines.  Further, as mentioned earlier, your available 
bandwidth is distance dependent.  That is not the case with cable 
modems.  I get my knowledge from 35 years experience in IT and 
communications systems.
