One thing I always do as a rule these days when I receive new hardware is 
stress test the disk subsystem.  A simple run with bonnie++ has 
yieled "funny" results for me in the past ... lets just say that some of 
those fancy-schmancy raid controllers don't live up to their billing ;-)

Stresslinux.org looks like an easy way to get bonnie++ and more (someone else 
mentioned it), I'll definitely be checking that out.
