Automated auditing

Hi all,
 I wonder if there is anybody here who have experience with automated
auditing. I am planning to implement auditing on one of my box. I have
googled around, but most articles discuss how to do it, but I am currently
interested and what information would be important to collect without
burying myself with data. Lots of data are good after a problem, but I think
it may not be a good idea if one want to be proactive.
