hel[ tracking down two pesky problems

Gnome uses esd for all of the sound effects, unless this is turned off in
the sound preferences (gnome-sound-properties).  I'm not sure what else
would use esd once that is turned off, but I don't recall seeing esd
anywhere once I got gnome to stop using it.
