Bytecc 2.5" External Drive Enclosure - bus power supplies enough juice?

i ran into a power issue with a similar product:

it wouldn't work on certain computers...  (though on others it was fine).

it had a DC input but no power adaptor... so i took a power adaptor from 
an old ZIP drive (seemed to have the same voltage rating as USB 2.0 - 5V i
think?), cut the cord and added an appropriately connector from yet another
adaptor... plugged it in...  and it worked great!
