Did you remember to set the boot partition active?

Is the hidden partition at the start or end of the disk?

Did you change to hidden partition?

Some old IBM (and compaq and such) machines had the BIOS setup program
on a partition on disk, and only stored a minimal BIOS and the settings
in the actual BIOS.  All to cut costs of course.  You had to use a
special floppy to create the partition or to load setup if you didn't
have the partition on your HD.
