You have already had most of the suggestions made that I was going to make
except for one.

You may find TUX magazine (http://www.tuxmagazine.com/) of interest. It is
an electronic magazine available for free via the net. It bills itself as
"The first and only magazine for the new linux user". Back issues are also
available online.
