Personally I have a two pronged approach to the problem.
I use my gmail SMTP server address, when using my laptop, when I am on
the road, in the evening. It is free. The disadvantage is that the
outgoing email is changed to my gmail account name.
In the labs during the day, I use the webmail interface that my ISP
provides because I cannot get access to the university networks.
There are also companies that you can sign up for, that allow relaying..
If you are interested I could dig out the information but I seemed to
remember a price of $4.95 per month

Best Wishes
Jim R.
