MandrakeSoft stopped the use of the magician's hat and wand in its logo 
(see image) but maintained the name MandrakeLinux for its product up 
until the merger. The star (from the top of the wand) remains in the 
current company logo.

Mandriva is the name formed by the merger of Mandrake and Conectiva (one 
'n'); Conectiva is actually the older of the two companies, and one of 
the participants in the failed UnitedLinux project. For more information

The merger was finalized in February; it wasn't until June that Mandriva 
acquired (not merged with) Lycoris (formerly known as Redmond Linux):
