Unable to set resolution

Solution:

kde control panel > peripherals > display

* Uncheck "Allow tray application to change startup settings"
* Uncheck "Apply settings on KDE startup"
* ctrl-alt-backspace
* log in again

The resolution stays at the default 1920x1200.  Now, when running kde
control panel > peripherals > display I can see the 1920x1200 screen
resolution listed.
