Install deborphan and debfoster and give them a try.  deborphan will
return a list of packages upon which nothing depends (lost libraries
etc.) and debfoster will run through your dependencies and give you
removal options on clusters of dependant packages.

Also useful is apt-file, which can help if you are missing a library or
utility, but don't know what package it lives in.
