Often not very.  There never was a standard for usb serial, unlike use
parallel or usb storage, so there is no generic driver.  Some of the
more common ones work, but many do not.  Some require non free firmware
files to be loaded into the device to operate it.  And then you have a
serial modem with power supply and a usb to serial dongle.  What a mess.
You can buy used pcmcia modems for $60.
