Odd, I was thinking just the opposite.  A modem is the safest
laptop pluging device for having an external power supply -
since you are already lmitied to a location with a phone
connection you are less likely to have a problem finding a
power outlet too.  Just about any other accessory makes sense
to be used sitting on a beach or other location that has no
wired connectors of any sort.
