Any mplayer optimization ideas?

You should have no problem with a 450 MHz P3.

What else are you running (Window Manager, Eye candy etc...).

I find that mplayer is okay with a processor as slow as 200 MHz but is a big memory hog.

Also make sure you are getting the 45kbit sustained. Your network connection may be able to handle it, but you may be getting bursts instead of a sustained download speed. If you are getting that you are SOL. Its how ethernet works.
