If you buy a scanner supported fully by sane.  Many are not.  I used to
have great luck with Epson scanners, but unfortunately they have
switched to using the snapscan chips instead of their own, so driver
development has become a lot slower, although still happening.  Epson
was great at releasing programing specs for their own designs.  It seems
to be much slower when the specs are someone elses.
