I guess the real problem is that most software that depends on interface
stats will reset the counters on interface re-init. So unless you are sure
you are not going to reboot (not like you are running Win98).
The cool thing about ntop is that the stats are stored separately.. and wont
get reset. 

(dammit; I sound like I am selling the thing)

Yes, you are right. In that case Franco should take a look at a related 
project called RRDtool which can be found at 
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/

One of the projects under the "RRD World" section (such as Serverstats) may 
be more appropriate.
