How do I gracefully exit/shutdown a "remote" machine?

There's no reason why the key can't reside on a USB pen drive, with a
suitable symlink.  Also, the keys can be configured to use require a
password, so that even if someone else "finds" the pen drive, the keys
are still useless for them.
